the occasion of a discussion by email, it crossed my mind that I had written any article about the mood of the Hotel School of Lausanne or the lifestyle to which we submitted during our studies there.
To give you an idea of what to expect, I suggest you tell a little, thematically, how is the year that I am now called AP ("Preparatory Year", ie the first of four years of study to obtain a bachelor).
Branches studied:
This preparatory year, as its name suggests, is primarily there to prepare students to pursue their studies in the field of hospitality sectors. This means that the academic courses such as mathematics, logic, business English and office applications are used to get everyone to level on the fundamentals required to attack the first year Bachelor. Courses oriented F & B (Food & Beverage) allow a basic grounding in this field you need for further studies.
In contrast, operational courses such as laboratories Kitchen or service (three of each, each including a week of theory and practice week) or during Housekeeping put us in direct relationship with reality and gives us the opportunity to experience the most operational areas of the hotel and catering.
This category of course is important in the philosophy of the school that emphasizes knowledge of each step of the hospitality industry.
This also helps prepare for the practicum mandatory four months, taking place either during the winter, between spring and summer of the freshman year.
Validation branches:
To be successful in your freshman year, you will validate your course modules. The modules each include several branches of the same field in order to offset any bad grade in one or the other materials. This means that validation is not done in one or two rounds of review, but throughout the year by numerous tests. For example, the kitchen laboratory No. 1 (including one week theoretical and practical one week) will be noted on a written submission which will allow you to validate it at the end of two weeks. Then, this note will be included in your group average "kitchen" for validation your year.
Note however that this method applies only to the preparatory year and is subject to possible changes in each fly.
Course Schedule:
If you are advised to live on campus during the freshman year is largely due to scheduling practices for weeks (kitchen, service, housekeeping) which can be very exhausting (hours cut, intense physical exertion, etc.)..
Overall, courses usually start between 8am and 10am and finish between 16h and 18h with a break of one to two hours for lunch noon. Free time outside of these is often essential for group work, reading course material and writing files validation.
means is that, from Monday morning to Friday 8am 17h, you probably will not have much free time. It depends, obviously, the way you organize and your effectiveness at work but keep in mind that this year is far from easy.
sustenance at EHL: A crucial point
this year lies in catering on campus. Already because you will feed you well if you want to cash in the amount of work required but also because your food budget is prepaid. Namely that in your tuition required, you will be charged a fee (approximately CHF 3'500 .-, non refundable) to be loaded onto your student card so you can pay in various outlets.
For those staying on campus, this amount will not be enough (unless you only eat salad every day) and for external, it will be too large for their needs. Anyway, you probably complain at a time when another system, kitchen, service, opening hours, menu or any at a time. And finally, comparing with colleagues in any other university, you will be glad of your situation.
Know for now (I intend to write an article about it) that the outlets are divided into four stations (fast food, world cuisine, Mediterranean cuisine and salads stand) and two restaurants (The Farm and the birthplace of the Senses ) and two bars (bar and bar Gateway M).
You will find, depending on the time you want to eat, everything you need drinks, snacks and meals. At this point it is known within the school, most students take a few pounds during the freshman year because of the availability of food (personally, I've lost, go figure).
Free time:
Although I said earlier that there was virtually no, you will have some free time if you organize properly. However, you will often use it wisely, ie playing sports or participating in school communities. I also plan to write an article about it, because the subject is vast, so I'll just say for now that your interests will often take place on campus because it takes about thirty minutes to get downtown from the school.
exception of holidays here Thursday night I talk about in this article .
If you like sports, reading, watching dvds or just hang out with your colleagues, you will manage fine. Otherwise, it will really become very, very efficient in your work.
The atmosphere within the school:
What I immediately marked, when I went for the first time at EHL is the cosmopolitan side of students. Indeed, with over 80 different nationalities (and a common language: English) campus is a great melting pot in which everything seems to be very colorful, lively and very animated. The dress code imposed (or dress suit all day) adds a very professional side and licked at the overall picture, which is far from being unpleasant to the eye ;-).
The campus is a bit far from downtown (about 30min, as I said above), students are required to form a fairly cohesive and intimate community. As we said during the introductory weeks "the students you see around you are your friends, colleagues, friends, your family. "This becomes even more true if you come from abroad and you can go home only rarely.
level of relationship with faculty, small class sizes (about 25 maximum) and presentation of work can develop a true student-teacher dialogue, essential to quality learning in the field of hospitality.
General Organization of School:
Although my comparison capabilities are not huge, I can safely assure that the organization of schedules (Outlook synced), courses (course Internet), internal services (available also on internet) or events is of excellent quality. Obviously, there are always small details that could be improved (and are) but, in light of other universities or HES as I know, it is clear that EHL is a leader in the areas of Hospitality for nothing.
Accommodation on campus:
As most students of the preparatory year, you may choose to live on campus. The rooms will be assigned double rooms are relatively small but well equipped with storage spaces. They also have a bathroom with shower, sink and toilet.
During the first part of the year, you will share this room with a roommate you can choose (if you know someone in your fly before school) or you will be allocated on a list of criteria (such as the usual time in bed, available in storage, usually a roommate, etc.).. While many fear that a little life experience in common, I think it's a great way to integrate into the school first, but also a fantastic life experience.
Being personally advocate of collocation in principle, I already had the opportunity to train me to the idea and also to experience it (yes, the army is of community life, no doubt). I think it is important for any future manager, to have the humility to have had at one point in his life, sharing living space with a (e) perfect (an) unknown (e), which ends often become a (e) friend (s).
In conclusion, I can already say that my months at EHL are among the most rewarding and most "Fulfilling" of my student life. It is imperative, however, that this experience takes place and although it is normally covered by the selection process of the school: the whole match "profile EHL. This does not mean that students wanting to change the world or the artist in the soul are not welcome, however (and for good reason, I think part of the first category cited), it simply must be ready to provide some work for courses as well as on oneself, to adapt to school expectations as to its environment.
Allow me to recall once again the indispensability of good thinking about goals that we set before embarking on such a adventure. It would be unfortunate to find themselves, after two years of studies and tens of thousands of francs spent, given the inevitable realization that the wrong way (although in itself not a not more drama, there have been worse in life).
